Why Thrift?
I wasn't always a thrifter. My finances forced me to open some doors to opportunities to save money or make money while being a stay at home Mom.
My debts stemmed from alot of impulse buying. I was in over my head.
I was in desperation. I started small with just listing a couple items on Facebook Marketplace. Made a few dollars.
I know people who are experienced thrifters. Always have some new trinkets in their home, new designer clothes, handbags and shoes. I wondered how they were able to afford all this. So I was given the Thrifting 101.
Whether it was local thrift stores or online platforms of reselling.
My first visit to the local thrift store, it was a sudden flash of childhood excitement, with that sweet hit of dopamine.
Lets just say I was a kid in a candy store. Just couldn't believe the prices and all the unique fashion pieces and antique furniture.
Now lets look at what I have learned during this journey.
If this doesnt put the image of "START THE CAR" in your mind, I will be very surprised :-)
FACT: The Average family in Canada, spends approximately $2300 a year on clothing.
Just on thrifting I have managed to save about $600 to $800 a year.
I got a bougie and chic fashion with a KMART (my generation) Budget
If you've got that kid who seems to change their mind about 12 times a day.
A new style or trend it's a "Gotta have it" rampage :) The thrift store has really saved the day many times.
If you are the crafty one, make something out of nothing kinda person, then thrifting is your jam. So many unique fabrics and patterns to fit your budget.
I remember walking into the thrift store and spotting my favorite dinner plate set I had growing up. Remember the Bunnykins?
Was truly a nostalgic find and a memory to share with my children.
Buying second hand not only saves money, it keeps these out of the landfill.
Its definitely a way to slow down the continued use of energy, resources and the amount of pollution. A less demand for making new items.
There are always new products making their way to the floor so you will never get bored and the chances of the whole family walking out with some type of gem is extremely high.
You will even find items brand new with tags. Which are priced a little higher but still at a fraction of the price.
Growing up, thrifting just wasn't considered "cool" but now a days, online platforms such as Poshmark, Depop, and Whatnot are 25yrs and younger.
As I became more familiar and comfortable. Stepping out of my comfort zone to pick up these unique finds it became a "job" I created my own Closet of treasures. Selling online and getting requests to be on the look out for vintage pieces. On 1 platform I gained over 20,000 followers in under 6 months. Sales reaching to about $6000. Just by doing what I love and still having the time to spend with my family.
They have become a part of this and it warms my heart to hear "Mommy, look what I found?"
Thrifting has definitely open doors for a new community. I love getting texts and emails with pictures of my friends treasures. The excitement is just contagious.
Not only do I get to show off my designer clothes, handbags and shoes....I get the thrill of telling them the cost and not an ounce of shame my friend!
I hear "Wow I love the new Coat" ME: "Thanks. Its Thrifted" :)
